Each semester, the Writing Fellows — a team of Plymouth High School seniors who excel in their English Language Arts classes — dedicate a block in their schedules to helping other students become more confident and capable writers. A 12th grade Honors English elective for the tutors, the Writing Center is available to students during lunches and Bonus Block.

During the fall semester, the Writing Fellows hosted 176 appointments. Follow-up surveys showed that 90 percent of respondents rated their session as “excellent” or “very good,” and 100 percent said they would recommend the Writing Center to their peers.

“I really liked the constructive feedback that was given. It wasn’t harsh or mean. It was really well stated,” said one student. “I liked what Kelsey suggested because it gave me a different perspective on how to structure my paragraphs and clearly word everything.”

Another student shared a similar experience. “Bella had very useful insight on how I should structure my essay and helped me brainstorm ideas.”

While the Writing Fellows provide guidance to their peers, they’re developing their own skills. Before opening the Writing Center for the semester, they first learn peer tutoring strategies, like tutoring routines, conferencing techniques, and question prompts. They also visit the Temple University Writing Center in the Student Success Center to see peer tutoring it in action.

Teacher Brian Weiner believes that their responsibility for keeping the Writing Center running fosters accountability, professionalism, and a level of autonomy rarely found in the high school setting.

“At the start of the semester most students are new to the tutorial process and understandably apprehensive about working with unfamiliar peers and curricular materials,” said Mr. Weiner. “Over the course of the term I watch them grow into independent, confident, and enthusiastic tutors.”

The Writing Center plans to open the last week in February. At that point, students can click here to make an appointment for the Writing Center online.
